I also want equal time. Joe the non-candidate gets a slot, Jon the non-candidate should get one too.

When you're POTUS, that might work.

Let's see if he says anything political other than explaining why he dropped out. If he endorses Harris, that's political.

Of course he will. But I suspect his speechwriters were thinking more about Biden and his legacy than Harris.

I never understood the "equal time" stuff.

Fox will air hours of a Trump rally, and MSNBC will do the same for Biden Harris.

In a similar vein, POTUS always uses Air Force One as a tool for campaigning. I suppose it's couched as a "official visit," but is that fooling anyone?

Fox News and MSNBC are Cable, ABC is broadcast. That may seem a distinction with little difference to you, but to much of the country it is significant. Beyond that. IF Biden keeps the speech and interview to the subject of his withdrawal, no problem. If the actual election comes up and he makes a statement pro-Kamala or Anti-Trump, then equal time is warranted.

That's the first thing I understand. However, given the reach of these networks, should not the same laws apply?

Is it because the broadcast networks are partially regulated by the government?

Along with the fact that both cable channels promote their programming as news entertainment.

Yeah. Can you explain the differences?

                      Genuinely curious.

The idea behind the rule was that the television spectrum was a limited public resource so there were only ever so many channels that would be out there. So they had to live up to some standard of public service.

This doesn’t apply in practice to cable or streaming.

26 paragraphs in the transcript. The only mention of Kamala is this:

In just a few months, the American people will choose the course of America’s future. I made my choice. I made my views known. I would like to thank our great Vice President Kamala Harris. She’s experienced, she’s tough, she’s capable. She’s been an incredible partner to me and a leader for our country. Now the choice is up to you, the American people.

It would be revelatory listening to him talk four years from now, or even sooner, but I don't suspect we'll ever be given that opportunity. He will be so far gone by then.
