Recent protest in Barcelona. Juneau is thinking of ways to limit cruise ships and tourists. Venice is the same thing.
I can understand the frustration of the local people. It is a love-hate relationship with the tourists.

I mean, good for them. Tourism seems to be the primary income driver for so many places, but if the locals wants to limit it, even if that means fewer dollars, the protest makes sense and perhaps the government will enforce limits. Of course, that'll only make the price to visit certain places go up...

One of the places I am hoping to visit is Bhutan, and they really want to limit both tourists and "cheap" tourists. So, they drastically limit the number of tourists allowed in and have a minimum spend of something like USD$200 or $250 per day per tourist (USD$100 is a Sustainable Development Fee).

I wonder what Spain would be like without any tourists. Not very nice, I suspect.
Then again, I remember going on holiday to Mallorca in the 90's. There's a lot of English tourists in particular who are real assholes.

Yup. Figuring out how to keep the same income from tourists with less people. I know that Venice has instituted a USD$5/day tax on non residents entering the city. Something like that will raise income but I don't think it is enough to reduce the number of people.

They could also stop catering to the lowest common denominator. If you wander around a resort in parts of Mallorca or Torremolinos it's pretty obvious what they're trying to attract. I saw more Roy "Chubby" Brown videos playing on TV's in Mallorca bars than I've ever seen anywhere in the UK.

Maybe Bhutan is on to something. LOL Charge people a minimum of USD$250/day, and the overall type of people visiting will change quite a bit. 555
