The thing is he's not a good speaker, although I'm sure he thinks he is. It was a droning, unoriginal, lazy waste of time. He said nothing surprising or revelatory or even seriously emotional about the shooting and offered up nothing we haven't heard before about platform.

Nobody knows more about speaking than he does.

A guy like Trump is going to have one style when he’s talking to a bunch of fans and should have another when he’s trying to reach a broader audience. While this should have been the latter, I suspect he was driven by habit and by the people in the room to shift into the former. From the reporting I saw it sounded like he started off with a speech and went into Trump Rally mode after a half hour or so.

He's in his 70's and does a lot of rallies. Habits are very hard to break at that age.

Yeah, but also the crowd in front of him was rally-like. I’ll bet if he was talking just to a camera he would have stayed more on script.

A blogger comments on the length of the speech.

I noticed in his speech, he gets annoyed having to read other people's written lines, so after every line he reads from the teleprompter, he then offers asides and digressions to add his personal flava to it.

Like he read: "From Yorktown, to Antietam, to Midway, brave Americans have joined the roll call of immortal heroes."

And that's obviously not Trump's way of speaking.

Then he turns to the audience and freestyles it: "These heroes, these heroes. So many heroes, so many. We need to cherish them. We need to cherish these heroes. Did you ever notice that? No one says 'cherish these heroes' any longer, no one says that. We need to build statues. Beautiful statues. I love the flag."

Then he goes back to the script for a line.

That's why it was so long -- the script itself was about 45 minutes long, and then his asides were just as long.

In both the debate and the convention, all he had to do to secure a win was to exercise a little discipline and act presidential. He couldn't do it.

Oh, I think he won the debate, hands down. The debate is what broke the media silence on Biden and what will lead to his ouster. Either voluntarily or through the 25th Amendment.

I don't think he won the debate but squandered a golden opportunity. No one won that mess.

The fallout for the Biden campaign just shows his party's values, or lack thereof.

+1, and even when he’s trying to commend others, it comes across as self aggrandizing.

If I'm honest, I think this is the root of why I can't stand him. He just never fucking shuts up about how awesome he is. Clearly he's got some kind of problem. Now far be it from me, as an on-line doctor, to make a formal diagnosis, but I think he's probably a complete dickhead, if you'll forgive the technical terminology.

I agree, but here’s the weird thing. He is genuinely well liked by a bunch of people that don’t really need to put up with dickheads. I don’t get that..

I find it trivially easy to not hate Trump. But if he triggers your disgust reaction, your hatred of the guy is just inevitable. Humans don’t rationalize around disgust, they just go with it.

Sadly, we can’t all be as rational and rooted in logic as Trump’s supporters clearly are.
