Lucas was visiting over the weekend. He told me on Sunday that some of the guys he was going to the beach with next week were planning on having cigars, and he wanted to participate, but he wanted to look like he wasn’t a complete noob, and asked if I could teach him how to smoke one… So we went to the cigar store, bought a couple of sticks, I bought him a V guillotine and some cedar sticks. Karla heard what we were doing and snuck out to buy us a bottle of WhistlePig (she actually likes it when I have the occasional cigar so long as I shower afterward, I think she likes the smell when it’s fresh, and also I have a tendency to get talkative with a cigar and a whiskey and get relaxed). We went out to the deck late on Sunday, I taught him how to snip it, and light it, and we had a VERY nice evening, just the three of us, talking over a glass of whiskey.

It was a bit weird, but like @George-K said, it’s a wonderful thing when your kid also becomes your adult friend…

As a side note, @mark , if you like a robust cigar, I bought these Aging Room Nicaraguan cigars with the advice of the shopkeeper. They had won the top rank by Cigar Advocate in 2019, but were still priced moderately at $17. It was probably the best stick I had ever tried, better than a few that I have had at twice the price…

Anybody else enjoy the occasional cigar?

    The Brad

I enjoy the smell of cigars. Reminds me of my grandfather.

Very cool, that you had this experience with your son.

            Cigars are good.

I forgot to have my summer vacation cigar last year, maybe this year.

I like em with a good snort of cognac or whisky.

Never was a fan. I always inhaled.

                Cool experience, though.

Very very nice! They pair well with the Suntory World Whisky.

The Suntory looks nice, too, but I have to slop through the bottle of WhistlePig my wife gifted me.

I see them as half-way between a cigarette and a pipe, in that you don't look cool, but you don't look like an abject twat either.

I may be a little biased. I used to smoke them during many vain attempts to give up the cigarettes.

                            I was only joking

It's been decades since I smoked a cigar. Even more decades since I smoked a pipe.

Never enjoyed a cigar. When I finished, I always felt like a freight train ran across my tongue. I suppose it could have been the cheapo cigar I smoked - no I don't remember.

However, a pipe never had the bite, and never offended anyone in the room. I rather enjoyed a pipe. I liked the ritual, the flavor and the "ambience" of a pipe. Granted, I'm going back 40 years, but...

I enjoy the smell of a cigar much more than the actual taste/experience of it. That being said, it has been a few years but I do, in general, enjoy smoking a cigar and as I think back on the number of times I've done it, I mainly recall the WHO and WHERE... with my brother on a golf course, with my brother in law on my condo's rooftop. That's what makes it special... it slows down time. It facilitates a good, long, conversation with someone important to you. You experience culture, you pair it with a good drink, and it usually involves some refreshing nighttime breezes as you linger.

@George-K I've never tried a pipe, but something tells me I'd prefer it, too.

The smell is really hard to shake, though, and I don't blame my wife for requiring a good shower before I get in bed smelling like an ash tray.
