30% increase or we leave...

Fire breaks near lines would be a real good place to start. I never thought Newsom had a chance to replace Biden. His record is enough to squash him.

I agree. It seems as though he is reversing a bit on some of his positions, but I think it is too late for this presdient cycle.

Climate change is real and has real costs.

Need infrastructure projects to maintain and renew infrastructure.Climate change has been real since before man ever took a step…And the wildfire problems in CA existed well before we were seeing any appreciable warming. In fact, the biggest cause for the increase in wildfires in CA are due to the government no longer suppressing them as they did in the first half of the 20th century…due to the thinking that the fired are a part of the natural cycle in California and that the fires allow for regrowth and are particularly helpful for sequoias.
But I absolutely agree about actual boots on the ground infrastructure. And it’s a legitimate function of Government! Too bad Build Back Better didn’t actually address the issue.

Louisiana comparison:
About a dozen home insurers have pulled out of Louisiana since hurricanes Laura, Delta and Zeta in 2020 and Ida in 2021.
https://www.eenews.net/articles/louisiana-relaxes-rules-to-lure-back-insurers-as-damages-rise/
Louisiana lawmakers are making it easier for insurance companies to drop their riskiest properties in a bid to shore up the rest of the state’s teetering home insurance market.
.
The state Legislature this week passed a bill to repeal what’s known as the three-year rule. Instituted after Hurricane Katrina, the law blocked insurers from dropping a policy or raising its deductible after it has been renewed for three years.

Florida:

The growing risk of increasingly higher damage claims has led several private insurers to cut coverage across the state or leave Florida entirely, leaving many homeowners in the state with limited options for coverage.
Meanwhile, premiums have ballooned to be among the most expensive in the country. Last year, according to the Insurance Information Institute or Triple-I, Florida homeowners paid an average $6,000 per year in home insurance, more than triple the national average.

Yes, the Earth's climate has changed every day for over 4 billion years.
The change is not controlled by presidents or congress or governors or spray paint on priceless art.

Guess I’m out of it. I heard the increase in wildfires is BECAUSE they are suppressed too much and not naturally burning the way they used too.
Either way, lots of homes built in the middle of dry kindling forests… agree with @Mik that fire breaks are one of the only real answers.
I don’t really attribute wildfires (or hurricanes) to global warming. Maybe sea level rise but otherwise it’s not as direct as some claim, IMO.
And the insurance raise? As they said, rebuild costs are up 31% so insurance increases make sense to me. And trust me, I don’t like it!

…Yeppers.
When I was a younker, any damn fool knew you didn't build your home down on the Gulf. You built camps and shanties...Stuff that if a storm tore it apart, you just rebuilt out of pocket.
Then we started building stuff we didn't need to build in places we didn't need to build it in. Couple that with erosion in the marsh and you have cases where property loss can be some pretty big numbers.

Controlled burns ARE 1 step of suppression. There’s a difference between controlled burns and wildfires. It’s in the name.
But there are multiple other components as well.
