So, if Trump wins, I'd imagine Thomas (76) and/or Alito will retire. (I didn't realize Alito was already 75). They'll be 80 and 79 at the end of the term. If Biden wins, maybe Sotomayor (69) will? The RBG legacy of waiting too long makes this even more important these days.

One would hope that the very low bar of character necessary to retire strategically, will be met by most justices going forward. But as mentioned in a different thread, I think those with deteriorating mental faculties lose some of the higher order bits of human character, as they lose the more obvious bits of memory and words and logic.

If they retired it would be towards the end of his term I would think. Though maybe if Trump wins and the GOP picks up a majority in the senate they’d leave in the first two years, figuring it probably wouldn’t last through midterms.

Yeah, Senate makeup will be key. It looks like Montana or Michigan are the R’s best shot at picking up a seat.
