While the former President entered hospice care in February 2023, his grandson Jason Carter recently shared the 99-year-old—the longest-living President in U.S. history—is “doing okay” as he approaches his milestone 100th birthday Oct. 1.
“I mean he’s been in hospice for over 19 months now and he has really physically diminished and can’t do much on his own,” Jason told People Sept. 17, “but he is emotionally engaged and still having experiences and laughing, loving.”

Bet he's gone not long after his birthday.

I wish him a peaceful end. He's certainly surrounded by love.

He would have a pianist flown in every year for his birthday. We would supply a D for the concert at his church. I had to drive down from Atlanta to Plains to take care of the paperwork. He showed up in a softball uniform. Apparently he and his secret service detail would play a game against the high school baseball team every year, too. That was 20 years ago, so he had to have been 80, and was still playing.

I read his autobiography, A Full Life, a few months back, a man of some integrity. I also read his Palestine Piece, Not Apartheid - also worth a read.

I just heard from the manager of the Atlanta showroom, they are shipping a D to the HS in Plains, GA today, and David Osborne has flown in to perform for his 100th birthday…

@Axtremus said in President Carter nearing the end:
That’s actually not the event for today. That was recorded in Atlanta about a month ago. The concert today is in Plains and is just for him and the maybe 3K people living in Plains.

Of course President Trump has to chime in in a dumb way.
Donald Trump mocked fellow former President Jimmy Carter during a campaign speech on his predecessor's historic 100th birthday.
Trump, 78, brought up the 39th president of the U.S. while speaking at a manufacturing facility in Waunakee, Wis., on Tuesday, Oct. 1, according to PBS.
After calling President Joe Biden the worst president in U.S. history, Trump told the crowd, “Jimmy Carter is the happiest man because Jimmy Carter is considered a brilliant president by comparison,”

Shockingly, Trump is the only living ex-president to be so crude. All the other living presidents handled the event with style and grace. We’ve seen Reagan’s comments on his predecessor at the inauguration of his library. No doubt it would be easy to find classy comments from 41 over the years.

I'm surprised Biden didn't just say "Thanks for making me look young!"
