Why does a city mayor need the equivalent to secret service protection? Ridiculous.

It’s a good question but I would also point out that just because there’s a black suv following the mayor doesn’t mean it’s security. While some is, there’s probably a larger cohort of his political entourage.

My guess is that they're a service vehicle like in the Tour de France. If he has a puncture or a mechanical problem they can immediately provide him with a new bike, ensuring that he isn't late to any of his meetings. They're saving taxpayer money!
