              From a friend...

Back when I was working, our company attended a summer business show in Nashville Tenn. We all went out to dinner at an exclusive restaurant on Main Street. There was seven of us and as we were going in there was a sign that said that parties of five or more had a 20% service charge on their bill.

As we were going to our table we saw a couple sitting at a table and the man was the general manager of one of the main finance companies in the XXXXXXX industry. We said hello, shook hands and went to our table. While we were sitting and pondering what to order the waiter pushing a cart came to our table and opened and set three bottles of wine on our table. He said they were compliments of the gentleman we passed on the way in.

The point of this story is that the wine was around $120 a bottle and the guy was charged a $72 service charge because it was served at a party of five or more even though a party of two ordered and paid for it. There was a strong argument, to no avail, with the manager. The servers expected a tip on top of that.

Hahah that's hilarious but no seriously let's compare farm subsidies to waiter's tips and oh hey that's not what chefs do basically at all.

                    Please love yourself.

Just posting in this thread because I don't want to start another.

If you stay at a hotel one night, do you tip the housekeeping staff?

Yes. I get the same service as if I stayed two nights.

No. I used to leave a 5 every day, but I got service every day. Now you don’t get it even if you request it. No tip.

I went through a Starbucks drive-through this morning, and on the credit card machine they hold for you, you have to select your tip before inserting your card. There's no button for 0, you have to figure out the system to go through whatever custom menu that is. While dealing with sun glare and the shaky hand holding the machine for you through the window. So I chose the lowest number, $1 on my $4 order, and decided I probably wouldn't bother going back to Starbucks again.

If you do leave a tip, best to give it directly to your waiter in cash and pay the restaurant bill by card:

That was just the universe balancing out when I went to Caribou Coffee on Thanksgiving day, I swiped my credit card and then I asked the guy where I can leave a tip. He couldn't figure out the machine and had to awkwardly get a coworker to come over and help. They finally figured out a way to manually type in extra, so I gave them a few bucks. I never tip at a drive thru / coffee place but they were the only place open on Thanksgiving, so I wanted to give thanks.

I tipped the waitress that served our lunch on Thanksgiving day 33%.

The place was packed, the only thing open for miles.

And that’s why certain servers and restaurants do better with the tipping model. There are a significant number of people that want to tip excellent service. They don’t want to feel compelled through higher prices, though, and they don’t want to see poor service compensated the same as good service.

I just tip cash to the wait staff. What gets me are the high tip options for haircuts. Holy Guacamole.
