You can download map info in advance to your phone then you don’t need cell service. GPS works everywhere.

Until your phone gets wet. Or your power cell dies. Or it gets crushed after a fall, etc., etc.

It's easier to use a phone with one hand, after the other is pinned by a huge boulder.

Theoretically it can be important but I cant remember the last time I used a map. I’ll bet not in the 21rst century except for map quest print outs I suspect.

Does that include the compass built into the rear-view mirror of my car?
-
Does that include "using" as in "looking at the compass to see how to get somewhere," or "looking at the compass and saying 'Whoa, I'm going east!'"

Who here's gone benchmark hunting?
(Surprisingly, I never stole one. I'm kinda proud of that.)

Geocaching for the win!!! LOL (is that similar to benchmark hunting?)
I love maps, and the history of maps, but have not used one to navigate for a while. Away from cell reception or for hiking, a good Garmin or Magellen unit with map loads (both roads and topography) work pretty well.

Benchmarks have always been around but yeah, geocaching FTW! They have pretty much all of them listed, which makes it pretty easy for them to find.

Definitely within the last 12 months, and I used a “real” compass too, not the solid state one build into many modern “smartphones” these days.
