Shave and a Haircut...How Much?
-
When I moved to our town, back in (!) 1980, I went to a local barber, Bill. I was never one for "stylists" or any of that carp - just cut the damn hair and be done with it.
Bill did a credible job and I went to him for years and years. In the early 1990s he died of pancreatic cancer (I actually ended up giving anesthesia for his surgery).
After he passed away, I found another local barber. Angelo's shop is in the local train station, and he's been there for at least 30 years. He's an immigrant from Italy, and he golfs 9 holes, at least once a week, weather permitting. Angelo has had a heart attack, a CABG, and now, at the age of 84 he's still going strong. Over the years, he shared his other chair with several people, and the most recent is his son, Mike. Mike's not as good, or careful, a barber as Angelo, but his jobs are serviceable.
Angelo cut my hair today.
Looking at prices.
Haircut: $30
Beard Trim: $20
Haircut and Beard: $40
Shampoo and Haircut: $40 (iirc).Angelo says that COVID cut his business by 25% and it's never come back, so he's increased his rates.
Cash only, by the way.
So, what do you guys pay for a simple haircut?
What do you tip?

I cut my own hair.

$40 and $10 tips. But the place does shave your neck with a straight razor, and gives a hot towel treatment while rinse out your hair. Plus you can come back between major cuts and get a light trim for $5…

Yeah, the barbers at my shop are different about that, too
-
$20 here, plus a 5 dollar tip.
The rest of my family cost considerably more. Last time I mentioned this, one of them said 'yeah, but look at your hair, dad', so now they're paying for their own fucking haircut.

Sounds like a SportsClips I go to. Surprisingly cheap (?) for an “MVP” cut. Includes cut, massage gun, shampoo massage, and hot towels. I think it’s $33 and I usually tip $10-15.
Before that I’d go to Great Clips and I think it was $22 for a cut?
Finally, I do remember when it was $14 or so for a cut like 10 years ago at the Hair Cuttery but times and costs have changed.
Ok finally (for real) my dad went to the same guy for like 40 years. I also had the same person for a while before I left. There’s something nice about going to the same person over the years.

Yeah but what do you pay?
I usually tip about 10%
Sometimes as much as 25% in more hard-to-reach places.
