Stupid, Stupid, Stupid

It's not as dumb as it seems. Because of how all the dead money plays out, the Steelers are probably not paying him much over $1M.

So it’s good to pay for a locker room cancer?

The Broncos and Seahawks both combined to pay this man over $100M to go away. Now Pittsburgh signs him? Screw that. I really don’t think I can watch them anymore.

The Vikings fanbase accepts your application.

And don’t forget, that means there is no way in hell that Mason Rudolph (the guy that had the best 3 game stretch of any QB in the league last year, and did it in the most critical 3 games of the year against other teams fighting for the playoffs) signs. He’ll be a backup somewhere, which looks like it will be a waste.
So best case scenario. Do you think an aging WB with declining physical skills gets the Steelers to the Super Bowl? Laughable. Best case is they make the playoffs. Maybe win a game. The year after that? They have no QB. Not even a backup. They are back to square one.
Stupid.

If they sign Rudolph to backup Cousins, I would have more than a passing interest.

Maybe Payton knocked the cancer out of him.

Then why pay him $37M to play elsewhere?

Payton is a my way or the highway coach. He also wants a certain type QB. Wilson ain't the type.

Yeah? Pittsburgh’s supposed to value locker room guys. That’s what’s supposed to be a part of what makes Pittsburgh different. Pittsburgh’s supposed to build from the draft rather than hire mercenaries. Oh, the occasional mid level lineman Sure. But not the attitude guy. Not the “star” not the look at me guy. Pittsburgh’s also supposed to be a team that doesn’t rebuild but competes. This move? This isn’t the Steelers or what they claim to be. This is the Redskins. This is the Browns. Sorry, but no. I’m not a guy that just roots for the Jersey. I walked away from the team during the Kordell years, and I might just walk away now.

Once Pittsburgh went for Trubisky I knew they were lost. This is a further step down that road.

Trubisky was somewhat understandable. This? Stupid.

A different read on the situation. Might not be so stupid after all.

A couple of major problems with the article -

Those 6 quarters of success Pickett had post-Canada? That was still Canada’s system. Oh, a different play call maybe here or there, but even the play callers admit that nothing really changed. The difference was execution, not concept.
-
They ignored the giant red-nosed reindeer in the room. Rudolph was the best NFL WB over the three most important weeks of the season. You could have signed Mason for 2 years at $5M per and signed Ryan Tannehill for similar. They still likely will sign Tannehill. The Wilson deal only haves $3.5 Million for the QB room.
-
Wilson is 37 and declining. He is not your future or even a bridge. Last year his play was called garbage by Schlereth for a reason

Let’s talk locker room - Seattle

What next? The phrase I keep hearing is “win a playoff game”. Great. Let’s say everything goes great and they win a playoff game. Where are they in 2025? No QB’s in the hopper, Wilson won’t come back for league minimum then, and he’s a year older/worse.

I'm old enough to remember when Wilson was considered an extraordinary locker room guy. I guess it became clear that it was intentional branding on Wilson's part, and it wore thin.

Locker room? He didn’t use the locker room his first year with the Broncos. He insisted on a private office/changing room at the Broncos facilities.
