Local theaters here typically start the real movie 25 minutes after the advertised start time. The exceptions are some foreign (typically Hindu or Chinese) movies; there typically aren't that many previews shown before the start of a foreign movie.

Yeah.
I was surprised.
Since this was a matinee on a weekday, the theater was nowhere near full (I think there were about 8 people in the theater). Maybe next time, knowing this, I'll plan accordingly.

As I said in the other thread, I saw "Dune" today.
It was scheduled to start at 12:45.
At 12:45 they showed (at least) ten trailers for movies.
I can't remember them all, but...
A romcom with Ryan Gosling
A sequel to Planet of the Apes
A sequel to Godzilla
A sequel to The Road Warrior
Some alien invasion movie
A sequel to Ghostbusters (with Ackroyd and Murray!)
A sequel to TwisterAnd several others I can't recall.
The actual movie started at 1:05.

Regarding all the sequels and remakes in the previews, I will remind you that you were there to see a sequel to a remake of a movie from the 80s, that was remade as a miniseries on cable in the 2000s….

Looking back, it was kind of goofy, but when I was younger, it was quite common to go to the movie at whatever time you wanted, and just stay until it looped back to the part you walked in on.

It’s ridiculous. Slowly getting worse. I used to work in the movie theater 25 years ago and it was about a 13 min wait before the real movie started. When I went to see Oppenheimer it must’ve been 22-25 minutes before the real movie started. It really really annoyed me. But it’s probably worse for popular movies…

Funny how times have changed, even in my lifetime. Used to look up movie showtimes in the newspaper, now you can reserve a specific seat on your magic phone.
I actually like trailers, so I don't mind them but these days with kids the schedule is a little more crowded and I'd prefer not to wait nearly a half-hour for a movie to start.

Standard uses a Xenon light source, Laser uses Laser. Resolution is the same but it's crisper, brighter, more colorful. Most IMAX also uses Xenon, Dolby uses dual laser, Prime also uses Laser. "Laser at AMC" isn't a premium, it's the new standard, but IDs the upgraded auditoriums.

The Reddit poster was probably just rating the light source technologies.
In most cases, I don't care. Most movies are watchable just fine on a tablet, many are fine on even just a smartphone. Very, very few can exploit the differences between the big screen technologies in movie theaters.
Even for the movies that can exploit the nuanced differences, our aging eyes may not be able to tell the difference anyway. :man-shrugging:

I don't recall the details (SORRY!) but I do recall digging into the details between seeing Laser vs IMAX for Oppenheimer. I was trying to judge which would be the better viewing experience and IMAX won out.

I dont go to too many movies in the theatre, but I always think that they are better in the movie theatre than watching on a small screen.
