From the article:
Despite Gentili being a self-proclaimed atheist, the funeral's organizer - Ceyenne Doroshow - chose St. Patrick's Cathedral as the site for her funeral.
…
When planning the ceremony, Doroshow didn't mention Gentili's lack of religious affiliation to the church. 'I kind of kept it under wraps,' she said. The funeral organizer was wrong to conceal the deceased’s lack of religious affiliation.
Not sure if the church did any check or was otherwise aware of the deceased’s lack of religious affiliation before agreeing to host the funeral, or has any clause in their bylaws or contract that allow (or even obligate) them to refuse hosting the funerals for those lacking religious affiliations.

I don't know how they do it in New York, but down here the church and the funeral directors are very aware of the aspects of a funeral service. And I've seen cops take out and arrest people at a funeral.
St.Patrick's apology does not hold water. Somebody had knowledge within the church and went ahead with this sacrilege.

Then the question becomes whether the “someone” who had that knowledge has the power or is obligated to act based on that knowledge.
