Just to re-iterate, the Netflix show is NOT the Amazon Prime show.

If you're talking about "Three-Body" and not "Three-Body Problem" you're in for a long wait.

The sky was blinking, that must signal non-stop action is on the way.

        Disappointment, Right?

Here's the problem. In the Netflix series, you have no real idea what the blinking sky means, how it happens, or who caused it.

In the Amazon series, there's a slow build-up to the event. The nano-tech guy investigates and receives a really good explanation of how this happened. How, but not why or by whom. But, it took 5 episodes to get there.

          Also...

          ***geeky stuff***

          click to show

In the Amazon series, it's clear that the "blinking sky" is observable only by the nano-tech guy. It's a perception of blinking, not an actual blinking, of the background microwave radiation. Yes, it's measurable by instruments and satellites. However, no one else on Earth sees it. At least not without special equipment.

I watched the first episode. Yeah, depressing. I'll probably slog through another one or two this afternoon.

But, geez, talk about slow moving....

            Nope. Not gonna.

I made it through 6 episodes, and...nothing has happened. There are another 24 to go through and that's only to the end of the 1st book. You'd think that, after 5-6 episodes, something would have happened - but it hasn't. It's all about the nano-tech guy who sees the countdown. That's it. They keep talking about the suicidal scientists, but no progress there.

            It's not "slow-moving" it's glacial.

Sorry. I wanted to like it but the pacing is just too slow, the translation/subtitles are awkward, and it's poorly acted.

The Chinese (not just mainland China, but also Hong Kong and Taiwan) like to make long-running TV series. Heck, it started in Hong Kong. Even back in the 70s/80s, the producers in Hong Kong routinely pumped out series that run 30+ episodes per story, even 50+ episodes per story was quite common. I don't have a good theory for why that is.

Re-reading the books has given new insights into the Netflix series. There's SO much material that is subtle, that really doesn't make sense unless you know the whole story. The first season uses material from the second and third books, not just #1.

I rewatched (at fast speed, skipping a lot) the first two episodes this afternoon - before my nap. They've done a good job making the story approachable while keeping the overall theme.

Season 2 should be fun - if it happens.

I just finished the first season of the Netflix series (I didn't realize there was an Amazon show, let alone books LOL). Anyway... the first 2-3 episodes are pretty good, very intriguing, but it shifted into a mediocre TV series for episodes 4-8 or so. (Episode 8 is the last episode). Basically it starts great and slowly degrades. I'll watch a 2nd season if it comes out, but I'm not holding my breath.

The problem with the Netflix series is that it shoehorns a lot of stuff from the 2nd and 3rd books into the first season. The whole "stair step" project is in the 3rd book - as is the idea of sending a brain.

The books, despite their length, tell a "tighter" story. Each book has a main protagonist, as opposed to the series. The Chicese cop plays a MAJOR role in the 1st 2 books, for example. The inventor of the nano fiber is a major character in the 1st book.
