Agreed, but for this year what are the alternatives? Give me one frigging alternative between batshit and senile on one side and batshit and senile on the other.

Supreme Court. They have become the ultimate power in our lawfare ravaged nation.

If elected, Trump (or a GOP nominee) is rumored to get as many as three appointments. Chew on that one.

Stop pretending this is 2016-2019 Donald Trump. By all reports he is FURIOUS with Barrett and Kavanaugh (supposedly he was looking for ways to remove Barrett from the bench in 2020). The advisors that helped him pick those appointments are no longer there, are considered RINOS and are considered the enemy. His moderating influences are gone. Now it’s just the yes men.

What I don’t get is the great support he has when most of his positions are contrary to the deeply held convictions of his supporters.

Furious? Lord knows I would be. If elected, would tickle me if he went through the Just-us Department like a dose of epsom salts through a widow woman.

There are checks and balances within our system. I think if we can survive Andrew Jackson, we'll do just fine through four years of Trump.

                  1. Wait for the primaries to end, then you see what your options are.
                  2. The “both sides are equally bad” narrative is false. No other side is as bad as Trump. Trump is uniquely bad for the country.

No, but I think many misunderstand Trump's support at its most basic level. And it's not populism.

It’s populism. The same sort of populism that Erdogan, Orban and Putin appeal to and manipulate. In Trump’s case he’s a finely tailored combination of Huey Long and George Wallace.

Edit: quite likely a fair bit of Juan Peron in there as well.

I disagree. I lived through Wallace and waded through the after effects of Huey.

What happens to this movement once his four years are up? So much of it is based around one guy, and win or lose, he won't be running in 2028.

Maybe his kids will run - you chaps have always secretly liked the Royal Family, so maybe the Trumps will fill a hole you didn't know you had, if you'll pardon the euphemism.

I think the hope is that he will be succeeded by a younger more competent and less brash version of the American Moses. Perhaps Ron DeSantis although the more reactionary elements in the evangelical base may have some reservations about the Governor’s papist faith.

Understand, this started in the TEA party movement.

                                      1. A reduction in the size, scope and spending of the Federal government
                                      2. Strong borders

I'm not convinced all that stuff is what truly drives the Trump base.

                                        I was only joking

It’s populism. The same sort of populism that Erdogan, Orban and Putin appeal to and manipulate. In Trump’s case he’s a finely tailored combination of Huey Long and George Wallace.

Edit: quite likely a fair bit of Juan Peron in there as well.

I agree. I believe that he could change some of his positions and the majority of people who support him would be in line with that and have no problem with the change.

@LuFins-Dad is correct that he will just surround himself with "yes man", even more than before. President Biden is incompetent and senile but at least he has people to keep him inside the appropriate lanes. President Tump does not have that and that is scary.
