No, but I think many misunderstand Trump's support at its most basic level. And it's not populism.

It’s populism. The same sort of populism that Erdogan, Orban and Putin appeal to and manipulate. In Trump’s case he’s a finely tailored combination of Huey Long and George Wallace.

Edit: quite likely a fair bit of Juan Peron in there as well.

I disagree. I lived through Wallace and waded through the after effects of Huey.

What happens to this movement once his four years are up? So much of it is based around one guy, and win or lose, he won't be running in 2028.

Maybe his kids will run - you chaps have always secretly liked the Royal Family, so maybe the Trumps will fill a hole you didn't know you had, if you'll pardon the euphemism.

I think the hope is that he will be succeeded by a younger more competent and less brash version of the American Moses. Perhaps Ron DeSantis although the more reactionary elements in the evangelical base may have some reservations about the Governor’s papist faith.

I suspect Don Jnr. might have some ambitions in that direction. It could conceivably get quite funny.

Understand, this started in the TEA party movement.

                    1. A reduction in the size, scope and spending of the Federal government
                    2. Strong borders
                    3. No amnesty for illegal aliens.
                    4. Constitution Originality.
                    5. I'd say America First, but I think that may be just a bit much. Let us just say an intense reluctance to be the world's policeman.
                    6. An emphasis on fair trade
                    7. An emphasis on domestic production, including manufacturing, IT and energy.

I agree. I believe that he could change some of his positions and the majority of people who support him would be in line with that and have no problem with the change.

@LuFins-Dad is correct that he will just surround himself with "yes man", even more than before. President Biden is incompetent and senile but at least he has people to keep him inside the appropriate lanes. President Tump does not have that and that is scary.

I think a lot of it is his personality. The idea that he is willing to say what they think, and not just regarding political issues. Also, the fact that he's perceived as an outsider - non establishment.

Of course, these are some of the reasons why others dislike him quite so much.

                              I'd agree with that.

I'd also add that Trump provided a voice to the "silent majority" in 2016 after years/decades of nearly all media (movies, music, TV, news, celebrities) pumping out liberal talking points that being conservative is closed minded, or racist, or religious is bad. The hard working folks, often in the rural areas, finally had someone who cut through the crap and said what most people think. Heck, I think of his "of course I use tax loopholes" honesty in the 2016 debate:

That played well in 2016. Although it still plays well among the base it really should not. For one he is among the elite, a multi millionaire and very much a player in the establishment. Secondly, to say he is not a politician is blatantly false. He is very much a politician and one with four years of experience as POTUS. He was not such in 2016, but is now. He is no outsider, he is deep inside.

It’s populism. The same sort of populism that Erdogan, Orban and Putin appeal to and manipulate. In Trump’s case he’s a finely tailored combination of Huey Long and George Wallace.

Edit: quite likely a fair bit of Juan Peron in there as well.

Biden has NOBODY keeping him between the lines. They are riding him like a midget riding Secretariat…

                                        Vote for Biden.

Shows how well Trump has trained his base to react to any hint of deviation in the Party.
