We just discovered that Luke’s Air Pods aren’t holding a charge anymore. Seems like a great idea for a Christmas gift… However, he’s kind Of thinking that he might prefer a good pair of over ear headphones for most of the time, and just use his wired pods when he’s exercising. I don’t particularly care for that idea since I ruined an iPhone by using wired headphones when I walked the dogs. I never considered the stress that put on the lightning port…

So, should I get him wireless buds/pods or a a decent set of over ear? Also, which are better? Air Pods 3 or Beats? They are priced the same…

And if you recommend over the ear, what would you recommend? I just saw a set of Sony WHM1000XM5 for $330. That seems like a helluva deal but is more than we were planning on. Suggestions?

Is he listening primarily to podcasts/audiobooks or music?

Those are excellent. I use them for the noise cancelling and the fact that they're wireless. Dunno what else is out there but the Sonys are indeed awesome.

        Please love yourself.

These are what I wear a good portion of the day - listen to podcasts/audiobooks - but less exciting for music. They don't cover the ears - bone conduction headphones.

Also, are you seeking noise cancelling headphones??

I guess he is. I personally can’t stand to wear them very long. I much prefer open back… But these are for him…

My personal bias is against the AirPods. If the highest quality of sound is sought, I find electrostatic or planar headphones are great - but there's leakage and people will know what you're listening to. If not seeking noise cancelling - Sony does a decent job. I'm partial to Bose for noise cancelling - have a pair myself. If he's cycling/running - I'd go with the aforementioned bone conduction as he won't lose them. I'm not as familiar with Beats. They had a bad reputation back in the day - BUT there's been a change in ownership - and are alleged to be much improved.

When doing serious listening, I go with wired headphones - either Stax electrostatics with a class A amplifier - incredible, dynamic sound - or Senneheiser HD800s - with a different headphone amplifier by Topping that is incredibly neutral.

OOps...I guess we've moved on. Typically, get a good/long day's worth of listening.

Why not just let Luke pick his own headphones? He knows what they will be used for.

That was a typo. He’d meant to order a Satan hat

                          I was only joking
