They're not. Dams are extremely controversial. They drastically change ecosystems. That's not really up for any serious debate. The argument is whether those changes are actually as detrimental as they appear to be.

I think sometimes that makes sense. Not all dams are equally helpful to humans. But if they're generating a massive percentage of power and there aren't any alternatives, that would be very bad.
