Once again, I see so many memes, articles, tweets about how to avoid confrontations with family, friends over politics at Thanksgiving.

None of these have ever occurred in my family.

I'm sure that my kids and I disagree on more than one political issue. Yet, somehow, it never comes up when we all get together.

It almost strikes me that these articles, etc, sotto voce encourage you to engage on these disagreements, while "tut-tutting" that you should not.

You have better things to talk about. My brother simply cannot resist delving into politics.

We'll be joined by four Chinese people, and thus spared any potential for culture wars. On the other hand, when we had an American neighbor over for dinner a few months ago, a political tribe was worn on a sleeve by one person at the table. The fight was there for the picking, if anybody else at the table felt as strongly and oppositely as she did. Which of course, nobody did.

        Education is extremely important.

Excellent comment. Sometimes the nekulturny show their stripes and the classier folks just smile, nod, and ignore them.

Good initial observation in this thread George. Never forget these aren’t news outlets but are corporate media revenue generators. Clicks and views and stirring up interest in a rubbernecking opportunity. Everyone looks at the car wreck…. Even if you bemoan those in front of you who slowed down to look too.

Some folks have surgically attached political viewpoints to their identity and value and a primal urge to discuss, debate, and commiserate with others takes over. I’d MUCH rather listen to Horace Mik LD Jolly George Jon and others talk about their meat.

              Brisket, that is.

Pffft. Politics is amateur hour. You want real, actual, not-fucking-around-I'd-stab-you-if-I-could-hide-the-body fights then c'mon down. Always on offer at the in-law's.

                Please love yourself.

@Aqua-Letifer I hope you are thankful you’re not there today. But I have my doubts.

I have a predilection to snark but an aversion to conflict but which is a rather unfortunate combination, so I used to have a tendency to make a sarcastic remark and then absent myself from the ensuing debate.

                    Hard to believe, I know.

I've learned not to argue with family. I'd much rather hang out with them, and I don't get to do it often enough. Still, as a Brit, my favourite holiday is Thanksgiving - zero pressure.

                    I was only joking

                      Politics is easy.
