"Mystery pneumonia" in China

Oh, good.
Scientists have raised concern over a mysterious “pneumonia like” illness that has left hospitals in China “overwhelmed with sick children”.
An alert was issued through ProMed – a large surveillance database which monitors disease outbreaks– warning of an epidemic of “undiagnosed pneumonia” in children.
Taiwanese news website FTV News said that children were presenting to hospitals in Beijing and Liaoning – 500 miles northeast – with symptoms including a high fever and inflammation of the lungs, but no cough.
A Beijing citizen told the outlet: “Many, many (children) are hospitalised. They don’t cough and have no symptoms. They just have a high temperature and many develop pulmonary nodules.”
He added: “Now you are not allowed to report to school. If you have any symptoms such as fever, cold, cough and then you are hospitalised, you can ask for leave.”

Sure……why the hell not? An encore performance by the Corona Virus Opera & Ballet just when everything else in the world is going to hell in a hand basket.
Edit: other news sources are reporting it may very well be a form of “walking pneumonia” a bacterial infection. My wife had a bout of that nine years ago. Laid her low for close to a month and then a slow gradual return to normal over another couple of months. Am sure though kids recover much more quickly.

Alright, let’s shut it all down and start mailing checks…

Where’s my check?

That’s a relief. Chinese public health announcements are as good as Gospel.

Imagine if it was black lung syndrome.

Had Finley over at the mall yesterday and he was playing with a bunch of other kids. Woman comes in with three kids, one of whom is hacking out a lung. All the parents grabbed their kids and left… It emptied out in about 5 minutes…

Unless it is an antibiotic resistant (superbug) strain.
Even then, bacterial infections can be easier to prevent than viral… Of course, they are also generally nastier
