Working with the Jetsons

I'm in a temporary office for 2 1/2 years. They've started demolishing my normal place, to be replaced by a super-building, and we've been moved a couple of miles up the road to a place that used to be owned by a tech company.
Problem is, the cube farm looks like the Jetsons. Space Age as envisioned in the 1970's. Thankfully I have my own office, but some of the poor schlubs are in cube hell, and the colour scheme is enough to give anybody a migraine. It might be a long couple of years.
Whine over. I should be happy to be employed in a company that's investing.
The other problem is it takes 20 minutes to drive the 3 miles from the old place to the new one. Aaaaarrrrgh.

The guy in the cube across from my office has an old name tag left from the previous occupant. I have decided to refer to him as 'The lovely Tatiana', as such was her name. He's going to get quite aggravated by it I sense. He's already mumbled something about harassment.

It's definitely been worth it as far as the house goes. We have a basement apartment where the kids live, which gives us a lot more room, or it will in a few years once we've sorted the upstairs out properly. There's still quite a bit of work to do, we're using the kitchen in the basement as the one upstairs is pretty nasty. I have a nice office/music room, and we have a lounge free of kids. I underestimated the cost of the improvements, but we only have a small mortgage which we re-cast so that over the next 5 years we should be able to improve it significantly.
I love the area, on the border between town and countryside, but only a half hour from Providence, which is nowhere near as good as Boston, but does have some shopping and what-have-you.
The 60 minute drive on the I-95 to the new office sucks, but there's a second office which I can use a couple of times a week, and which is a much nicer 25 minute drive in the countryside - it's really out in the middle of nowhere as they do some serious large scale fire-testing there.
Overall, definitely an improvement. We'd really reached breaking point in terms of space in the old house.

Glad to hear man! Is the longer commute during rush hours or always? Not that we always have flexibility but I wonder if that’d help. Anyway glad the new house is working out!

I left for work at 5.30 this morning and still hit rush hour after about 25 minutes as I got tangled up with Boston commuters. I'm going to try pushing it back a little earlier, but there's only so far I can go. In theory it's a 45 minute drive, but it took over an hour today. The last 3 or 4 miles take about 20 minutes which is really frustrating.
It's actually not so much the time, but the stress level. The Masshole factor on the I-95 is pretty high.

Ugh that sucks, yeah not too much you can do about it. I just got a flashback to the Kenny years at the old TNCR and how I drove for a week trying to maximize my MPG just for fun. The real thing I remember from that is how much calmer (and a bit slower) I was as I would stay in the slower lanes of traffic, let myself give space between myself and the next driver, glide to a stop, and so forth. It was a calmer experience, but of course it came at the cost of getting there as quickly as possible.

I would find it be incredibly difficult to work in-person again. It's not the commuting. I loved that the most. I miss the audiobooks . Still listen to them but I don't burn through 2 a week like I used to.

A place where women of a certain demographic go to work when costume design doesn't pan out. (These aren't my co-workers, mind, they're just the Vogons of the department.)
