One would think that would tell the electorate something, but I see little evidence of it.

It has on the Dem side, most Democrats think he's too old to run again. But they'll vote for him in the absence of realistic alternatives.

On the GOP side people's attraction to or repulsion from Trump is based entirely on his persona and behavior in and out of office rather than age. I never heard "I love Trump, but he's just too old, so I'm voting for XXX"

Yeah they want to keep their foot in the door for when Biden resigns or dies, and then Kamala takes over. At least that should help the GOP in 2028.

Given his history with predictions, I'd take this with a grain of salt. Dick Morris claims that Biden will drop out of the race before the convention next summer, opening the door to a floor fight at the Dem convention. That way they'll be able to get rid of Harris and usher in Newsom (who is totally not running, amirite?) or someone else (Whitmer? Pritzker?).

Whitmer would be my guess. Newsom's popularity is at a new low in CA.

                Hey! That was my prediction!

I think you are correct (as usual)

                  https://www.axios.com/2023/11/06/newsom-pritzker-south-carolina-elections

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker both recently cut checks for a candidate in this month's mayoral election in Charleston, S.C., Axios has learned.

Why it matters: The donations to Charleston candidate Clay Middleton signal White House ambitions for both governors, as South Carolina recently moved to the front of the Democratic presidential primary calendar.

The moves by Newsom and Pritzker are part of a larger pattern of ambitious Democrats upping their national profiles ahead of 2028 or even 2024 in the unlikely case President Biden decides not to run for re-election in the face of poor poll numbers.
