If nothing else, be kind

I was downtown yesterday for some bloodwork. As I sat in the waiting room to be called, an elderly (at least as old as I) gentleman walked in, carrying a cup of what looked like McDonald's coffee. He sat down, opposite me, and down the way a bit.
After he sat, he took the lid off the cup (don't know why, I didn't see him do it), and the lid fell to the floor. It was obvious that he had to struggle to bend over to retrieve it, and before I could intervene, the guy sitting across from him got up, picked it up, and handed it to him.
Warmed my heart.

I suppose it's how you're raised, for the most part.
Not sure how to say this without it coming off uppity, but... it would feel very weird for me to see something simple I can do to help and choose NOT to do it. A dropped cup lid, holding the door... heck at Panera the other day an (elderly) employee who knows me and my kids by name now was having trouble putting on a lapel pin and I was able to help her. Oddly enough later as were leaving Panera I saw a purse on a bench seat with no one around so I brought it to the front counter for lost & found. As I left, some folks sitting there said that purse had been there for over an hour...and glad I picked it up. Why hadn't someone done something sooner?

Bending down to the ground to pick something up is my personal kryptonite. (Yes, I am claiming to be superman, but for that one thing.) I sometimes have to make the awkward decision not to help someone pick up their spilled thing, because I know it would be easier for them than it would be for me. Even though the optics are terrible. For instance recently when the 5 year old girl spilled her bucket of crayons right next to me. Actually I couldn't help myself and gave a token effort and picked one up. Slowly.

Why wouldn't someone help?
That's what you do.
I'm amazed at just how much social influence runs people's lives for them. I think there's a huge subset within the people who would help who would only do so depending on the perceived social response.

I'm simpler. People just need some Jesus.

Jesus was noticeable for never picking up anybody's coffee cup lid, although admittedly it could have been documented in one of the lost gospels - perhaps that of Saint Thomas the Highly Caffeinated, also known as Short-tempered Thomas who wrote a number of very irritable missives to the Corinthians. The Corinthians wrote back and told him to calm the fuck down, and things just went from bad to worse at that point.

A little known piece of trivia is coffee was actually the primary inspiration for the book of he-brews.

I agree with peoples sentiments in the thread. (Jokes not included however! LOL)
