          The mother could have been a typesetter, or whatever the profession would be for someone with that sort of fine sign lettering ability.

            Here the journeyman trade was called “commercial sign painter”. A person had to apprentice for at least four years under a journeyman to receive their ticket. I had a great uncle who was a journeyman sign painter. He worked for the Kimberly mine for forty odd years doing all the signage.
