Not directly related to the current war, but probably best forum thread to place this

    https://www.jta.org/2024/03/11/global/us-religious-freedom-commission-leaves-saudi-arabia-after-rabbi-co-chair-is-told-to-remove-his-kippah

A U.S. government delegation tasked with monitoring religious freedom around the world cut a visit to Saudi Arabia short after Saudi officials demanded that a prominent rabbi on the trip remove his kippah.

Saudi officials told Rabbi Abraham Cooper, co-chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, to remove his kippah while in public, the commission said in a statement on Monday.

Cooper, an Orthodox rabbi and the director of global social action for the Simon Wiesenthal Center advocacy group, “politely” refused the request with the backing of U.S. embassy staff, the statement said.

Saudi officials then escorted the government delegation from the premises of Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the outskirts of the Saudi capital, Riyadh. The delegation decided to end its visit to Saudi Arabia prematurely following the incident.

In 1945, Churchill gave a lunch in Egypt for King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia. Having been told that there could be no smoking or consumption alcohol in the presence of the king, Churchill informed his majesty that his own religion required “as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinnking of alcohol before, after, and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between them. The King graciously accepted the position.”

          @George-K

I never thought about it that way. I took it as Churchill’s way of reminding the Saudi King that he was the guest and that he, Churchill, was the host in his capacity as Prime Minister of the Government of the United Kingdom and representative of the British Crown and Empire.

But I see what you’re saying.

              Schmuck.

1.3% of Gazans have died in Israel's war on Hamas. They call it genocide. I call it restraint.

I am no fan of Bibi Netanyahu and think too that he has to go sooner rather than later; but what I think is neither here or there.

However, what Schumer said in his capacity as Senate Majority Leader is way out of line. In that role what he says and does is of US foreign policy consequence. My opinion on Netanyahu’s suitability is of zero worth to anyone or anything.

What Schumer said is interference in Israeli internal matters. He should be called upon to resign.

These pro Hamas types need the Alex treatment in Clockwork Orange. Mechanically force them to watch video footage of Hamas in action on 7 October and its immediate aftermath.

Let them see for themselves what a little taste of and bit of the old ultra violence really looks like.

I never considered that. What a fantastic idea, and perhaps they'll get a whiff of circumspection.

The problem though is that it really didn’t work all that well on Alex in the story.

He grew out of it all the same, though. Just the natural process of going from malchick to moodge.

                                          Please love yourself.
