The thing you posted. I could never use it. 😕 You were right that it's a good everyday machine, but I'm still stuck having to use somewhere between a MacBook air and pro.

Apple’s cheapest comparison: M2 silicon entry level Mac mini @ $600 with half the RAM and half the SSD storage capacity.

            Is that still a thing?

I considered it, a long time ago, but the lack of approved software updates from Apple made it quite the gamble.

You might not use it, but a lot of people like me would. What do most people do with a computer at home? Remote learning or school projects, shopping, social media, and light productivity applications. It's not robust enough for gaming or graphic work, but that's not its intended customer.

It works well if you buy hardware that is known to work with Mac OS. If you have just a random PC and try to install Mac OS, you are asking for problems.

I just spent 2k on a gaming desktop and I regret nothing. So many pretty lights.

Plus it chops figs as an extra feature.

The thing GK posted is cool, like a Raspberry Pi on steroids. Not sure it could handle decent graphics though, unless I missed the graphics card component.

I just proved tonight, yet again, that I CAN hear the difference between tubes and solid state amplifiers. I can even hear differences between two different solid state amps and two different tube amps. How is that possible??? It's a fact that different amps sound different. Live with it.

Nothing heretical here. I use streaming to discover new music. If I like it enough to want it on vinyl, I will buy it on vinyl. If not, it will be streamed forever or most likely, never again.

I don't have "high end" in every room. Some would argue I don't even have it on my main system. 🤣

I use a pair of M-Audio, powered studio monitors and a subwoofer on my PC. There is so much "surface" noise in my office that having more than that is just illogical.

I do notice sound quality wherever I go though. It varies so much. It's a game I play when out and about.

This Ayon Spirit III Integrated tube valve amp is considered "high end". It's made in Austria. At 38kg or 84lbs, it's built like a tank. I picked this up used about a month ago. I have done many amp rolling sessions between this Ayon, a Carver TFM35X 250-wpc solid state amp and the AkitikA solid state amp and preamp i built from kits. I have to use the AkitikA preamp with the Carver as it has no volume control.

I can also use the Ayon as a dedicated amp which bypasses the preamp circuitry and it becomes a stand-alone amplifier with no volume control. I have also paired the AkitikA preamp with the Ayon in direct amp mode.

The differences between the Ayon and the two solid state amplifiers is instantly registered from the very first sound you hear. The level of detail and separation of voices and instruments is one of the first things you notice as well as a more open "3D" sound stage. High frequencies are detailed but smooth and never harsh when using the Ayon. The same cannot be said of either solid state amp and surprisingly, the AkitikA is actually smoother on the high frequencies than the Carver. Both solid state amps clip anywhere from 66%-85% volume. I have yet to hear the Ayon clip even at 100% volume.
