If they can do it to those phones, they can do it to yours.

We often talk about politics and culture in a way removed from personal impact, but this looting hit home for me. An Apple store was targeted. I won't get into details of my personal emotional journey through this trauma. But please know that when discussing this, there are readers whose lived experience cannot be understood by others. Measure your words, and realize they may have an impact that you can never possibly imagine.

It's OK to loot if the police shot someone.

But not insurrection, just looting only.

Horace, I have come back to this post three times. It's as if an old friend has said something important, something that really bothers him, and I'm not able to help by understanding and giving at least some well-intentioned feedback. Are you OK, can you clarify at least a little bit? There are a whole lot of people that care about you, even though we are in this new virtual world. You can of course say, "never mind..." but even a bit of clarification would make me feel better so I don't unintentionally say something stupid or over the line. Yes, take note I just made this all about me. Ha.

I was only parodying lived experience rhetoric. Sometimes I make jokes like that, which I assume only I find funny.

The reason lived experience rhetoric was top of mind, was this presentation I listened to recently. Heather McDonald, admitted conservative with respect to race issues, gave a talk at Berkeley Law school. She talked about the perils of race trumping merit. Some black students threw profanity laced temper tantrums in the Q&A session. When pressed, one black student gave his top shelf example of racism he'd been subjected to on campus. Once, a security guard asked him for his photo ID to prove he was a student there. The leadup to this anecdote, which had to be wrung out of him, was that Mrs McDonald could never possibly understand the daily pressures of racism people like him are subjected to.

I don't know how prevalent this infantile attitude is, where black people are proud to throw tantrums over nothing, but it's a creation of popular culture and our encouragement of black people to consider minor experiences that could arguably have something to do with what they look like, as formative and foundational to their lived experience. Similar to toddlers not knowing how serious an owie is, until they observe how their mother reacts.

                              Racism, straight up.

The lawyer for a Philadelphia looter known as "Meatball" who livestreamed herself following a mob breaking into stores says criticism of her client is racist.

Dayjia Blackwell, 21, filmed and followed a mob of looters as they broke into a series of stores last week, including at least an Apple store and a Lululemon. Blackwell broadcasted the incident to her 181,000 followers on Instagram, and police arrested her for encouraging the incident.

"It sickens me to witness the media's complicity in what can only be described as an all-out assault on black and brown people, as their character and actions are mercilessly vilified," Blackwell's lawyer, Jessica Mann, wrote on Friday, going on to accuse police of posting Blackwell's mugshot "with tears streaming down her face and her hair a mess to satisfy your need to get ‘clicks’ and to sell a salacious story."

"Now look here, you Baltic gas passer... " - Mik, 6/14/08

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

@Horace finally watched the last quarter of that video, and wow what a mic drop at the end with the triggering "black privilege" line, LOL.

I must say... we all know that racism exists, against all races, and everywhere. Sure. The problem is there is this deeply embedded mindset among many persons of color, it seems, that any negative experience is somehow related to how much melanin their skin has.

Oh a cop asked for my photo ID? Must be because I'm black. Whereas when I experience negative situations, I think... that person is a jerk, or there is a misunderstanding, or they're having a bad day, or it's because I was doing ABC... whereas if I had a higher amount of melanin in my skin, it seems the culture has taught them to think that is the default reason, instead of the 10 other reasons for the scenario.

Oh and @Rainman - you're a good dude. Horace's sarcasm is dry and witty and I love it, and heck, I have caught myself copying it. Just know that @Horace likes the AAPL stock, and also the sarcasm.
