We seem to forget why we do not want to go to war. We see it in the US, China and Russia. I guess this is why we keep doing it.

That said, I think the guy is right. We need to listen to what Xi says, not just what we think makes sense.

Hmm, I partially agree. I think that economics will be a big factor in the decision to invade Taiwan. President Xi is a smart guy, and he is already struggling with a tough economic problem at home. Unemployment rate for people in their 20's is >21%. He saw the West response to Ukraine/Russia and the devastation it is doing to Russia long term.

If he invades Taiwan, bye bye to China.

Except Taiwan could be an economic boon for China. That could give him incentive.

@Aqua-Letifer not to mention a huge source of national pride if the economy is sputtering.

Yes, but............. if China invades Taiwan, what is to stop companies from pulling out of Taiwan? Taiwan only has a population of about 22MM. China is at least 50 times bigger. Taiwan is obviously big in semi conductors (TMSC for example), but reality is that if companies are able to exit Russia, and life goes on, the same could happen to Taiwan. :(. I just think that there are a lot more negative economic things that can happen vs. positive things for mainland China

              Physical reality.

The companies can pull out, but the factories and warehouses will still be there, which the Chinese can then take over and use. There quite a few high-end factories in Taiwan that have sophisticated equipment that could be well-used by anybody who has access to them.

              Please love yourself.

Sophisticated equipment can be artfully rendered inoperable.

Who's going to do that, the workers? Why tank their opportunity to keep working at the factory under different management? Things would be bad enough under a Chinese takeover without worrying about where to work after the dust settles.

There is a pretty high anti-mainland Chinese sentiment in Taiwan right now. I think that there would be quite a bit of "gorilla" warfare and resistance to any invasion.

A few years ago, there was a much higher % of people who favored closer ties with mainland China (but not to the point of integration).

Now, that number is very very low.

You assume every worker is amenable to working for the CCP.

No, I'm assuming every worker is more amenable to working than not working at all.
