A yard is over a half-ton. Chunk that in your pickup bed sometime. Won't fill half the bed, but's it's mighty heavy.

That's for an 8 inch depth - 4 inches, toddler-deep, would be half that.

The sandbox I built was lots of fun, until it started to become the neighborhood cat public toilet.
I ended up covering it when not in use, but then I started worrying about scorpions and their pals. Dug it out when it was overall done being fun for my son in the sun.

I once filled my trash bin with old fungus infested mulch. I was barely able to wheel it to the curb. Then they didn’t empty it because yard waste isn’t allowed. So I shoveled it into 15 smaller bags and have been throwing them away one by one.

If more people followed my lead, land fills would turn to fertile soil. As it is, because people are too selfish to throw away secret yard waste, our landfills are mostly plastic, metal, and hooker bodies. Sad.

A couple months ago I chopped down 5 30-40 foot Holly trees, they were dead or dying. The trunks had about 7-8 inch diameter.

They are too thick for the yard debris collection.

I cut them into about 12-15 inch pieces and I've been throwing away 8-10 every week for a couple months.

The pile is almost gone, but now I have a couple more trees to chop down.

It's an octagon, and is 84x78x9". Believe me, it holds 800 (they suggest 1,000) pounds of sand. I've filled it twice now, lol. Pain in the... back. I had to remove the previous sand because I sealed it too well over the winter and the moisture in the sand (and wood frame) looked weird to me this Spring, some signs of black mold. I'll make sure there is better airflow for this coming winter.

There are many times I wish we had the turtle sandbox that can be covered more easily, but the style we got fit the area a little better.

To your point, I've learned some tips and tricks to keep critters out, such as adding cinnamon to the sand (about a cup or two), which keeps most bugs out, and spraying the perimeter with some peppermint spray, keeps most spiders out.

The real issue is the cover, we have a cover for it but when it rains it just "pools" in the middle, so I've put a plastic circle pool upside down in the middle to act a bit like a "tent" but still... water still gets in from time to time. The cover helps keep critters and leaves out, too.

That's funny (or not) about splitting up the disposal of yard waste. For the previous sand, I was able to put about a third of it in the yard waste container and I held my breath as I saw the yard waste truck claw pick it up, I figured the plastic sides of the bin might bust. Luckily it didn't.

For the other 2/3s of the sand? I put it on tarps and dragged it to the edge of my yard and just dumped it like a dead body. Luckily it covered the actual dead body that was already there.
