Disney is Floundering
-
Their latest Social Documentary for kids featuring their first Non-Binary (I would have thought that any number of their characters were technically non-binary, I mean, what the hell was Stitch?) came in at a whopping $29 Million on a $200 Million budget (excluding promotional/marketing expenses, probably $100 Million). https://www.foxnews.com/media/disneys-elemental-features-non-binary-character-flops-opening-weekend
The Little Black Mermaid is not going to recoup their investment…
Strange World lost $100 Million
Lightyear lost $100 Million
Turning Red lost $168 Million
It’s getting bad

Well, yeah. Their storytelling process has changed. I mean that literally, they don't follow Walt's process anymore.

It was my understanding that there would be a comment about “floundering”.
For this subject, Flounder is appropriate…

Super Mario Bros is approaching $1.4 Billion.

I took it to be a punny usage, so LD gets a pass.
This time.

In Non-Disney related Box Office news, the Flash movie starring non-binary sex offender and kidnapper Ezra Miller is bombing, too. Who would have thunk it?

They should just fire every writer, producer, and director who has pronouns in his or her email signature. Problem will be solved in six months.

Yup
That applies basically everywhere. But more of that bullshit keeps cropping up.
I haven't yet been forced to provide this, but if that day ever comes, it's going to be "þu/þin".

So...the middle finger to DeSantis about discontinuing construction projects is probably absolute bullshit.

There was never any question about that. The office park was m any to be see for a division that they laid off in February, and a division in California that was refusing to move. They were signaling that the office project was going to be called off last November… But News needs to news…

If I worked retail i’d get a little button that says: “Infer them from my appearance”

Elemental is very well done. Sure, many laws of physics are violated (same can be said for Super Mario Bros.), but it's a very good film with very good storytelling. In terms of storytelling and production finesse, Elemental is at least as good as (and I would say much better than) Super Mario Bros. The Elemental has more emotional depth for sure.
What the Elemental did not have going in was name recognition. Elemental is original, a brand new creation. Super Mario Bros. has decades of name recognition and fandom built up over multiple generations of audience before opening day.
No, it has nothing to do with gender, on or off the screen. More to do with name recognition.
Another big factor is streaming. If you're a Disney+ subscriber, you know for sure you will get to stream Elemental if you just wait a little bit. There is no comparable expectation for streaming Super Mario Bros.

How much do you know about Disney's process, Ax?

Name recognition? It’s frigging Disney/Pixar. That’s as much name recognition that you could want. Toy Story had no name recognition until it did. Same with Cars, Monsters Inc, The Incredibles, etc.. By 2010, new content was knocking it out of the park simply because it was Pixar. Then came The Wokening. Whether this movie contains a lot of The Wokening, that is the content that the consumer has come to associate with recent Pixar releases. 5 years ago this film would have opened up to +$100M because it was Pixar…
-
Perhaps it doesn’t have much of The Woke in it, but there was a LOT made of Non-Binary character in Social Media a year ago or so, and cast members have continually talked about it. Disney caught on last fall that maybe marketing it wasn’t the best idea, but it was already out there.
-
Super Mario Bros had a marketing spend of $80M. Estimates for Elemental were between $100-$120M.
-
Streaming? Are you kidding? Most people know that Super Mario Bros would be streaming on Paramount+. That’s some weak sauce, right there…
