Agreed. It reminds me of Churchill’s comment about British policy re Ireland prior to independence:
Something like:
‘There’s something to be said for smashing them to bits, there’s something to be said for giving them everything they want. But there’s nothing to be said for our current policy’.
I think the reality is Nixon set us on a path to recognizing the CCP as the victor in the civil war (and hence the sovereign of all of pre-war china) but chose to ease into it to make it more palatable for public opinion and the Taiwanese.
