Talk about mixed messages. This comes after Biden declared we would defend Taiwan if China invaded.

"We do not support Taiwan independence.”
He is jealous.
He wants to be a puppet state.
And, just like the Big Guy, he could use a nice paycheck.

@George-K , you title this thread "We do not support Taiwan independence" as if it is new. That's par for the USA's "One China" policy since 1972.

Agreed this is a continuation of Nixon’s sea change in the early 70s.
But yeah, IIRC, Biden went out on a limb and had to walk it back some time ago.

I've never understood the disconnect between the rhetoric of the "One China" policy and the "We'll sell F-16s to Taiwan" reality.

Reminiscent of "we won't let Ukraine fall" vs "we won't do more than is necessary to keep it upright".

Agreed. It reminds me of Churchill’s comment about British policy re Ireland prior to independence:
Something like:
‘There’s something to be said for smashing them to bits, there’s something to be said for giving them everything they want. But there’s nothing to be said for our current policy’.
I think the reality is Nixon set us on a path to recognizing the CCP as the victor in the civil war (and hence the sovereign of all of pre-war china) but chose to ease into it to make it more palatable for public opinion and the Taiwanese.
