It does look a little like Apple have identified their target market as people with way more money than sense a significant disposable income, and are acting accordingly.

I read an article that Apple may have set the price so high because they dont want to sell too many, at least not initially. Want to get a large library of apps, etc, make sure all the technology is working well, and then will probably introduce a lower priced model.
