Tip creep

I thought this was good. I recall David Burton considering this a big issue. I suppose I have found it creepy too.

Slippery slope ... first you tipped only the sit-down restaurants' servers, barbers/hairstylists, taxicab drivers, now you're asked to tip everyone and no one (just the automated point of sale machine).
Look at the Japan and most of the rest of the world. They did not tip then, and they don't have the "tip creep" problem now.

I haven't experienced the tip prompt at self-checkout btw, but I don't doubt it exists. Just yesterday I got a sandwich at subway and the tip prompt was 20, 25, and 30 I think. So I selected Other and gave a buck. Honestly, I shouldn't tip at all. The service has not changed from what it was before. I'm not sure where to draw the line but I feel like tipping should be reserved for service-based scenarios, such as your waiter during an hour-long meal, not for someone taking 30 seconds to make a sandwich or pour a coffee.
That being said, since most people pay electronically, the tip jar for cash doesn't really get used so I can see why it has shifted to the screen.

Like dry egg farts, this is all just sound and fury signifying nothing.
My local coffee shop has a checkout tablet, complete with tip screen. I tip two bucks for a $5.15 order. Because I know the owner and know the staff. Because they make good stuff and I see them around town all the time when my wife and kids hang out. Because they had flooding issues on top of trying to change locations this year.
There's a convenience store attached to a gas station a couple blocks over. They have the exact same checkout tablet and I never tip them a damn thing. The people are just as nice, but all they do is work a register.
This isn't hard to figure out. The same people touting "fiscal responsibility harumph harumph business! " are now dumbfounded at a fucking cup of coffee. It makes no sense.

The key to this is don’t get intimidated into tipping, or by how much. You do not have to participate.

Exactly.
Also, pro tip: the tipping screen comes with the tablet software. The guy at the gas station really doesn't give a damn if you tip or not, the screen is just part of the checkout procedure.

How do you know whether the guy at the gas station cares whether you tip? Would it not be more reasonable to assume that, if tipping affects his take home pay, that he would care?
-
Even if the guy at the gas station don't care, chances are the proprietor or the manager who configured the software cares.
