@George-K said in Florida to revoke liquor license of Hyatt that hosted an all ages drag show…:

    @LuFins-Dad First Amendment, baby!

    But it’s not burlesque!

@LuFins-Dad there's a twitter account called "The First Amendment." That account is defending drag shows.

    Fine.

I'm awaiting it to defend drag shows in front of 6 year olds.

By the way, on a sort of related topic, I still haven't heard if Ax objects to his kids seeking out porn.

The James L. Knight center, where the event was held, is owned by the City of Miami and managed by a third party, not the Hyatt. I suspect this won't make it past an appeal.

DeSantis won’t care by then. A common DeSantis theme is to make bold but impractical or illegal moves like this. He wins the news cycle, and no one really pays attention when it gets walked back a few weeks or months later.

        Trump must be livid.

Apparently the Broward County Center for the Performing Arts hosted the same show later in the week. It’s owned and operated by the municipality, no unrelated private party to bully for headlines, I guess.

The problem is whose liquor license was used to serve at the event? I don’t know enough about Florida’s liquor license rules, for instance, but I do know that 20 years ago, that show wouldn’t have been allowed to happen in PA with alcohol served unless it was at a private club and would have been strictly 21+…

              Don't mess with Jon's narrative.

I don't think he'd take his son to one of these shows.

And let’s be clear, the issue isn’t that they had the show. The issue is that it was originally designated an all ages show, then begrudgingly moved into a rated R status and the show happened with minors in attendance.

My issue is the lack of clarity of who “they” are. The show has a producer and the venue has a manager and an owner. None of those three entities are Hyatt.

No, but Hyatt does share responsibility when it comes to the alcohol sold at the venue. It is their liquor license and there are regulations and laws regarding the sale of alcohol. Evidently the show violated the rules so the holder of the liquor license is held responsible. And this wasn’t a surprise. Hyatt and the venue were warned in advance, which is why they changed it from all ages to no children unless with an adult. That wasn’t far enough.

And seriously, why not just make it an adult only show? No kid should have been exposed to that.

Now, I will admit that I do have concerns about this escalation of weaponizing governmental authority. Just because we see it done from the other side doesn’t mean that an eye for an eye is the solution…

I’d like to know more about the warning. One piece I read said it came the same day as the event. Who received the warning? The hotel manager? What’s he supposed to do with a few hours notice for an event he doesn’t control?

If parents are fine with the taking their kids to this, it's hard to make the government step in as morality police.

The other side will cry out censorship, free-speech violations, etc. etc. I don't see what this crack-down actually achieves practically or politically.

Again, if I take Finley into a burlesque show, I will be tossed on my ass or the burlesque show would be shut down. I can’t take him into an NC-17 movie, either. State and Federal governments can and do interfere all the time in these matters. But since this involves the Alphabet Soup it’s all good…

Yes. The immediate objection that the move would put $5B of debt onto a small municipality turned out to be true.

And let’s be clear, the issue isn’t that they had the show. The issue is that it was originally designated an all ages show, then begrudgingly moved into a rated R status and the show happened with minors in attendance.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.
