The 60 year old lady was rescued. Apparently this happened in Changde, China (side note, never heard of it yet it has almost as many residents as USA's largest city, NYC). The article said the lady had not been in an elevator before and panicked, but was rescued.

The woman was likely a visitor from a rural area or one recently migrated from a rural area.

I was in Indonesia and the town I was in installed the first escalator in a store. People were lining up to ride it.
