Regarding DeSantis and schools, here's some fun family bullshit for you.
My parents are democrats, and when I was growing up, CNN and Newsweek were a big part of the family news diet.
Only they still are, and my parents just can't understand that anything has changed since the 90s.
My mom called me up to bitch at me about evil Ron DeSantis' "hostile takeover" of the New College of Florida. She called him "that evil motherfucker" for his involvement in overhauling the administration and laying some people off.
Yeah, I looked into the New College of Florida.
Here's what's not part of their Creative Writing undergraduate curriculum:
- Poetic forms
- Narrative styles
- The history of drama
- Structure
- Etymology
Here's what is:
- The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Reading as a Writer Seminar
- How a Woman Becomes a Lake and Other Unheroic Acts: A Craft Seminar in Gender and Genre Bending
- Rewriting the Renaissance
Some senior thesis examples include:
- Reclaiming Representations: The Revisionist Work of Ishmael Reed
- “[T]o isolate her out of the loud world:” Towards a Maternal Continuum in the Writings of William Faulkner
- Form or Fascism?: Exploring Genre and Innovation in Three Nontraditional Sonnet Sequences
Ol' Ron didn't go nearly far enough. He didn't bring gasoline.
This is just something I can't talk to my parents about. They watch CNN a LOT. And it's contributed significantly to changes in my dad. It's turned him nihilistic and bitter. (And if you ever met my dad before now, you'd know how insane that sounds.) So much so even my mom tries to get him to turn it off.
But, they watched the evil exposé on what DeSantis is doing to the New College of Florida and my mom absolutely believes Florida's governor is American Hitler.
My response: "..............yikes."
Absolutely no fucking way am I ever having that kind of conversation.

Maybe it's the God shaped hole, being filled by a good vs evil struggle fed to us by pop culture. Maybe established religions are a better choice, i mean if one accepts that the hole is going to be filled with something anyway.
Which is not to say there are no Christian woke people, but I suspect organized religion would at least provide a psychological buffer against it.

Ultimate Moonbat bait:
I think Jung was right: there's no such thing as an atheist. Not in terms of theories about the afterlife, but in motive action. We act out what we believe, and we all defer to some kind of belief to justify our actions. If you're a Christianity-vilifying Richard Dawkins fanboi, your belief might be something like the spirit or idea of Reason or Rationality, and of course you'd describe it less wooey, but whatever, you're doing the same shit so what does it matter.
I also think you have a handful of spirits or ideas you could choose to follow, and it's a good idea to choose wisely.
Probably the biggest reason why everyone's so fucking crazy these days is that no one's choosing at all. And so yeah, politics and media are filling the void.

That sucks man, but I get it. Media (tv, internet, social) has finely tuned the formula to get people sucked in and often live in echo chambers. <Insert chemical in the brain fact here>

Yeah, but reading the replies makes me despair for humanity.
