Hopefully never. I think everybody realizes that it would be a one way battle. While the words of the US have been very positive lately, I think the unspoken reality is that the US does not think that battle with mainland China would be worth Taiwan.

And that is tragic.
If the West was proud of itself, and collectively pushed back against the CCP, maybe it would be a better world, yes?But, no. Let's wait. Then, in time, something can happen and we can have a war.
I have followed the protests in Hong Kong. Frankly, I'm embarrassed that the U.S. only tries to sabre rattle, knowing full well we will do nothing. Hong Kong protesters want what we have. In the meantime, our demonstrators want some form of Marxism, even if most have never heard of Marx.
How many Hong Kong protesters, or any in Taiwan, will "disappear" in the near future. Rhetorical question, I guess.

On a personal side, this may make my importing of stuff from China much more expensive. There are no manufacturers yet in the U.S. to build what I need. Think I'm going to get a major hit financially.

I have said this before: if you need something that is manufactured in China, get it now. Supply chains are broken due to the pandemic, as well as flooding. When our stock of something runs out, it may be the Fall before we are able to restock. Maybe not even then, don't know.

Why not?
It's not like there is some flooding here and there, the destruction is massive. Even the Three Gorges Dam is indicating some structural weakness. Hard to tell though, as the CCP controls everything, and spins everything to make things look under control.
It's a national disaster in mainland China, yet the news media ignores it. Go figure. -
