Crystal Coast?

Anybody ever been?
We’re looking for a spot that’s OBX like, but without having to spend $10K for a week directly on the beach… Carolina Beach is popping up as a likely spot again, but I would like to try somewhere different…

We've rented down by Salvo a couple times. It is south on the way to Hatteras. It is mostly big houses, so they might bust the budget.
Sandbridge, south of VA Beach, is similar to OBX. I rented there maybe 15 years ago. It also has mostly large homes, but some smaller ones too.
We have been renting in Corolla for a number of years. It also is mostly big homes but they also have some like this Inn at Corolla:
I'm not familiar with the Inn at Corolla, but it is a nice neighborhood, we have rented several close to here.
This year we are going all the way up to Corova Beach. There are no roads here, 4x4 is a requirement, NOT 4WD, 4x4. Again, mostly big houses, we stay with 10-20 people so the big house is a requirement.

Thanks! Unfortunately, the Inn is on the Sound side. Not hearing the surf at night and the ocean breeze is a non-starter for us.
We want to be on the ocean and in a cottage. There ought to be something between spending $3K for a week to be in a glorified hotel room and $25K for a week in an 11 bedroom mansion…

I haven't been in many years, so take this with a bucketful of salt, but since y'all like to camp, something you might want to keep in mind for a later date:

There are only two ways to stay on the island. One is a pretty expensive inn and the other is camping.

That is a pretty good description of the OBX
There isn't much in between. I think you can find smaller homes in the Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk area, but they won't be cheap.
When I was young, we spent a couple weeks in Maine every year on Long Lake. It was in the middle of nowhere, but you could get a small cottage right on the lake.
I don't know if this is in your commute range. But you can find quiet up there. It has been 10+ years since I have been there, but I think it will still be pretty quiet.
vrbo for long lake:
Maine also has oceanfront, Here is one in Bath, I just picked this waterfront house at random, I'm not familiar with it, I believe it is actually on the Kennebec River, but close to the ocean
I have stayed on the beach in Bath, it is not the OBX, but it can be nice in summer
