At this point, I think what happens is the two major parties will incorporate change, instead of a new party emerging.

I think the Tea Party had a big impact on the Republicans and it showed with the election of Trump and the continuance of populism and some of the kitchen table issues you see this fall.

@Mik Agree. Has some good points. But it is so tough for a 3rd party in the US to make an impact.

It seems like the pendulum swings and once it swings too far to either side, that party begins to get too extreme, loses votes, etc., and has to swing back to the center.

Congressman Kinzinger from Illinois is trying something similar - not really a party I don't think.

Kidding. Good ideas, but agreed about what Jolly and TG said.

I think reforming (somehow) the primary process so that it doesn't reward/focus on the fringe candidates as much, would be quite beneficial. I also think (never) voters should demonstrate a very basic understanding of government before they vote.

I'd take it a little farther. Voters should have at least a rudimentary understanding of what and who they are voting for.

Anything related to a cognitive test unfortunately does not reside in the land of the possible.

Again, rights trumping responsibilities. This is what makes it hard to keep a republic.

We can’t even get voter ID or even require people to sign their mail in ballots, and you want competency exams?

I’ve said the biggest mistake the Founders made was not drafting a Bill of Responsibilities as well.

I think that is one major advantage to "ranked voting"
