They're basically full of it. Granny Smith, Golden Dorsett and Anna are about the only varieties that will make it in my part of the state and even then they don't do particularly well. Thirty miles south of me, they won't hardly grow at all.

I think you're spitting in the wind with the apple. Check and see what kind of pear would work.

Edit: I just checked and you're in Zone 9. I'm not sure a peach will work. Satsuma trees should work, as would some varieties of plums.

we’ve talked to some landscape people and have gotten as many different opinions as people we’ve talked to. But fig trees are universally praised. That was what I wanted most anyway. Citrus is good, as Mik suggested. Plum is a good idea.
Education is extremely important.

How about olives?
I had Autumn Olive trees next to my garage in the old house in Northern VA.
They grew like crazy, I had to cut them in half twice a year.
And the thorns put holes in the aluminum siding from blowing in the wind.
No more olives for me.

Genetic variety is good, less you get wiped out by one pathogen or one environmental change.

Figs should work really well. I've got one LSU Gold and one LSU Purple, but there are many good varieties.
Do some research on Satsumas. They grow a good many in South Louisiana. They're kinda like a mandarin.

Honeycrisp has been my top apple for a while (thanks Minnesota!) but recently SweeTango (again, thanks Minnesota!) has taken that spot. It's so good.
If I'm in a rush, Fuji is great, sometimes Gala.
How Red and Golden Delicious are still sold is a a crime.
