Actually I think I know this (didn't Google). I think it was Washington? To bring him, posthumously, into company with I think... Pershing? Maybe one more.

This reminds me, I was impressed when I started digging into Pershing's legacy. For example, he served as mentor to:

• George C. Marshall
• Dwight D. Eisenhower
• Omar Bradley
• George S. Patton
• Douglas MacArthur

I think they gave it to Pershing to make him not be outranked by Foch, and at the same time passed a law saying GW will always be the top ranked general in the US

Pershing. He got his while serving.

Washington didn't get his until I think the 1970's.

Not sure if this is true, but Gen. Marshall was (one of?) the first to be made five star general.

They were originally going to call it "Field Marshall" rank (like in other countries.

But he objected because he did not want to be Field Marshall Marshall. So, they changed it to "Five Star General"

Wow brain fart. Totally thought the question asked about a president. Yeah GW got his on the 1976 bicentennial celebration. MacArthur almost got it but it never passed Congress I think.
