I had a daughter who was very much into the books. I've read them, and while they're really nothing new in concept, I think they're pretty well done, especially in the Wizarding World created.
Some of the movies are better than others, but I think all are watchable. Many of the best UK actors of the period have roles in the movies, including Richard Harris, Maggie Smith and Gary Oldman. Rowling has admitted Alan Rickman's previous film roles were the inspiration for Professor Snape, so thank goodness he accepted the role Lastly, I thought they did a good job casting the three central characters of Harry, Ron and Hermione.

I loved the first couple of books mostly for nostalgic reasons. They very much reminded of books I’d read as a child. Also, I read the whole series aloud to my kids. “
I didn’t enjoy the later ones as much, I thought they became rather bloated, possibly in an attempt to create a real alternate world as Tolkien did, but not as successfully. The first couple of books might arguably compare to The Hobbit, but the last couple are not in any way comparable to the quality of Lord of the Rings.

Yeah, he marches to a different drummer than most kids his age. I stand corrected though about his next choice. This morning he tells me Robert Louis Stevenson’s Black Arrow is next on his list.

I enjoyed the movies. Reminds me of Christmas at the theaters... it's worth a dive to watch all of them. It's well done and John Williams' music is enjoyable.

He might be past it, but Men of Iron by Pyle is a good tale. Another are the two White Company books by Doyle.
Patrick O'Brians Aubrey-Maturin series is a great 20-book read, for Napoleonic War sea tales.
And...the Hornblower series are available free online for Canadians at The Faded Page.
