While I'm down the Potter rabbit hole...
-
I had a daughter who was very much into the books. I've read them, and while they're really nothing new in concept, I think they're pretty well done, especially in the Wizarding World created.
Some of the movies are better than others, but I think all are watchable. Many of the best UK actors of the period have roles in the movies, including Richard Harris, Maggie Smith and Gary Oldman. Rowling has admitted Alan Rickman's previous film roles were the inspiration for Professor Snape, so thank goodness he accepted the role Lastly, I thought they did a good job casting the three central characters of Harry, Ron and Hermione.
-
@George-K no, the movies are not worth the dive.
Now, the audible credits will be the absolute best you ever spent. The narrator for the series (Jim Dale) is absolutely the best narrator I’ve heard, and the experience is delightful.
The great thing about the books (and maybe the worst, in some ways) is the way they mature. The first book was written for an 11 year old, and the storytelling is appropriate. The third book is written for an early teen, and the tone and intelligence match… The 7th book is a very mature book, in keeping with the age and development of the original audience (her kids). At the same time, at the end you can go back and see how everything was perfectly plotted and designed.
Even though the first two books are a little immature in audience, the story telling and world building are magnificent.

Well, George likes entertainment along his particular interests, so I'd say he can skip these. I don't think it'd be his bag.
But there's more to Potter than entertainment. You don't get the worst possible reading demographic to wait in line for midnight releases of books because they're merely entertainment. That just doesn't happen.
I hated Potter for many, many years. I was completely wrong for doing so. There's some very deep shit disguised as entertainment in those books.

I loved the first couple of books mostly for nostalgic reasons. They very much reminded of books I’d read as a child. Also, I read the whole series aloud to my kids. “
I didn’t enjoy the later ones as much, I thought they became rather bloated, possibly in an attempt to create a real alternate world as Tolkien did, but not as successfully. The first couple of books might arguably compare to The Hobbit, but the last couple are not in any way comparable to the quality of Lord of the Rings.

Our son was never interested in the Potter books so I never read any of them. He seemed to go from
Diary of a Wimpy Kid to Dickens’ *Oliver Twist * in one move. His mother read Dickens in school and hated it. I read nothing by him although I’ve enjoyed BBC mini series on Dickens’ books.Kid is still reading Dickens. Says he wants to try Tolstoy next.

Kind of a weird kid you got there.
(That was complimentary, by the way. I like that stuff too and I'm definitely treated as weird for it.)
What does he like about Dickens? Any favorite stories?

Karla commented on it after dinner the other night. Talked about how much she likes you, but you still piss her off with the way you put down Harry Potter back in the day. That’s why the revelation floored me. Of all the damn coincidences…

Like a lot of shit back in the day, I still think I was right, but unfortunately I only had half the story.

He says he likes the way the stories are written. That’s about all he says about it when asked.
Yeah, he marches to a different drummer than most kids his age. I stand corrected though about his next choice. This morning he tells me Robert Louis Stevenson’s Black Arrow is next on his list.

If he likes Stevenson, "Markheim" is a great one. "The Ebb Tide" is good too if he likes shipwrecks.

I have done zero Potter - no books, no movies.
Is it worth the dive?
I enjoyed the movies. Reminds me of Christmas at the theaters... it's worth a dive to watch all of them. It's well done and John Williams' music is enjoyable.

Also Captain Blood. He might also like Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott.
