It's a self fulfilling prophecy. We distrust the media, but suck up all the slop in our "news" bucket and view the world with a distorted lens.
The MSM is busy creating conflict, not just reporting on it.
Trump has lots of warts, but no national figure deserves what has been done to him. And many revel in it, not understanding that the worm always turns.

Absolutely. They didn't give him anything like a fair chance.
It's entirely his own fucking fault. It's exactly what he wanted.
Trump started running when woke culture was well past the point of being pervasive. It was a serious problem. In the presidential election, it would have been disastrous to vote in someone who would placate their shenanigans.
But no, we get some asshole who legitimizes the woke narrative instead. Someone who mocks reporters with disabilities, mocks illegal immigrants, and brags about sexual harassment: exactly the sort of shit the wokes were accusing every out-group of doing.
The far right loved it of course, because they've been ridiculed and attacked so much in the media and online that they could no longer tell the difference between someone who's pouring gas on the problem for his own ends, and their own personal political savior. Nevermind the fact that this was just as damaging—fuck 'em, Hillary sucks and someone needs to get the wokes to shut up.
Well they didn't shut up because you didn't vote in a functioning adult. You voted for a troll you saw as Atticus Finch simply because he trolled for your side.
What we needed was an adult in the room, someone whose reasonability would act as a foil to the increasing craziness of woke culture. Such a person would have had tons of moderate support and could have made a serious go at stopping this nonsense. Instead we voted in a firestarter and look where we're at.

It's reasonable to believe that no other GOP candidate would have beaten Hillary. Given the history of what has happened since, especially with regard to supreme court appointees, it's also reasonable to believe that Trump was a useful compromise for the GOP. I don't think he's the best choice for 2024 though.

GOP should've been working on that problem way earlier. They had years to view the landscape and see where we were all heading.
But at the time, yeah, I definitely understand the argument. I just think he was damaging long-term.

The MSM is a principal driver of woke culture and the government is feeding into it just as Trump feeds into his own brand of outrage to serve his own ends. But I was responding to Trump's role in his unfair treatment, not every component of our political landscape.

Take it as a whole. I think that's the best way to consider it.

The look of the landscape as a whole is why I think we would have been much better served with a straight man in office rather than another fool. Most people, at the time of the Trump/Hillary election, wanted very little to do with the culture wars but had a sneaking suspicion the lefty narrative was becoming problematic. I don't think Hillary was the unstoppable force she was made out to be.
But the GOP really had no better ideas.

Like what? The beautiful southern border wall that Mexico was supposed to pay for? The repeal and replacement of ObamaCare? Huge infrastructure deal for the country? (Biden signed huge infrastructure deal into law back in Nov. 2021, by the way.) Letting Medicare negotiate drug prices? (EDIT: Biden
is expected to sign this into law this weeksigned this into law today, by the way.) -

I'm wondering if this whole FBI business is more of the same.
I can never forget what he said during one of his impeachments, I think it was: "I always find a way to win."
But no, we get some asshole who legitimizes the woke narrative instead. Someone who mocks reporters with disabilities, mocks illegal immigrants, and brags about sexual harassment: exactly the sort of shit the wokes were accusing every out-group of doing.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if it isn't too late to do just that? What names, if any, come to mind?
They'd need to get busy, though. It's this close to being too late.
Excellent essay, Aqua. You said very skillfully exactly like it is.

And...Justice refuses to release the affidavit. After being asked to by Trump.
Why would law enforcement tell a suspect of an investigation exactly what they know and how they know it, who tipped them off about what, etc?
-
@Jolly said in Cal Thomas on American confidence:
You howled because Trump didn't immediately call for the release of the warrant.
Now, you want the affidavit locked away in a box.
Make up your mind.
No. He didn’t need to call for it’s release. He could publish it at will.

Yes, it was.
Now, why won't Justice publish the affidavit?
