Whiplash, a 2014 picture.
This is a movie about goals in life, and about the limits how much you should push to reach those goals. It's about success or failure, and whether the end to get to success justifies the means. About how to lead people, and the abuse of power. All this exemplified, oddly enough, in a drummer and his teacher at a music school.
No bullshit CGI. No "message" that the makers want to force-feed to the viewer. No politics. No action scenes. Just excellent acting and good storytelling about a major facet of the human condition.
This movie has maybe the best ending I ever saw. Deep. Ambiguous. Disturbing. The saddest happy ending. Oddly satisfying. You can think about it for days.
My only criticism is that they added a bit too much blood and sweat in the drumming scenes to signal "intensity".
You shouldn't hate jazz music if you watch the movie.
Here's a trailer.

I see Amazon Prime has a new Ron Howard movie called 13 lives. No, it’s not about a grotesque Frankenstein cat made up of 1.4 cats’ worth of cat parts stitched together. It’s about the Thai group that got stuck in the cave when it flooded. I wonder if Elon Musks part will have a cameo.

I recall it getting buzz (including best actor?) when it came out. I need to watch it, thanks for the reminder!

Ok finally watched it. Copper also started a thread in 2023, too: https://nodebb.the-new-coffee-room.club/topic/28335/whiplash/5
I was expecting more. I saw the near universal praise for the movie, heard the ending was great (also as @Klaus said), so maybe my expectations were not fair. It was a fine movie, I just thought there would be a different revelation or twist at the end. Good drumming though, good acting. Worth a watch.
