So, a bank advises it's employees they can optionally do something if they wish.

Some customers are outraged for some reason.

Just wait until they get interest rates go through the freaking roof. Then they'll have something important to actually worry about.

    Honestly, get a fucking life.

Honestly, tell the bank to do what they are fucking supposed to do. Maybe worry about listening to their customers and managing their money well.

Do you think that giving employees the freedom to decide what to put on their name tags is likely to impact the efficient running of their finances in any way, shape or form?

I'm all for allowing people to be what they want to be in the workplace as long as it doesn't adversely affect their productivity. It tends to make them happier. And happy employees are better employees.

Nobody is being forced to do anything here.

No. That's why the customers are taking their money and leaving.

If enough of them do so, I suspect the shareholders will be forced to do something. Because I thought the purpose of a business was to make money, not piss off their customers.

            Are they, though?

A few people complaining about something on the internet isn't the same as people actually closing their bank account, which tends to be a bit of a pain in the arse to actually do. We don't even know whether the complainers are Halifax customers.

Were I a customer of this bank, I wouldn't care what their employees call themselves. (I'd care about how they manage and safeguard my money, that's it.) But if I caught wind of this message from the bank to its customers, "If you disagree with our values, you're welcome to close your account," I'd be gone off down the road, the snotty bastards.

OTOH, this self-ID crap has gotten so bad, maybe the bank is more worried about preventing a walkout (eyeroll) than taking care of its customers, even.

If that's the case, you KNOW things have gotten beyond insane.

I agree with @Doctor-Phibes Boycotts of a specific store (or something similar) usually do not work very well.

I can't speak for Scotland, but the bank business in the U.S. is so competitive, you don't want to lose customers for stupid reasons.

I hate organized boycotts of things. It's a horrible, horrible precedent for a free nation. If you don't like a business, don't patronize it. But don't try to get people en masse to do likewise to hurt the business. Who you are really hurting is the employees and the many people who may own stock in them.
