      Four percent of the sand on Normandy beaches is shrapnel that has been broken down over the decades into sand-sized chunks. See the smooth sphere? That's shrapnel, sanded down to a smooth, microscopic ball. #WW2 #HISTORY

              Right after giving the go ahead, Eisenhower wrote this note and put it in his wallet. It was the statement he was to make if the invasion failed.

              “Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that Bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone.”

                  Eisenhower's note is well-documented, and chilling. I remember seeing that years ago.

                  I just saw that the number of attendees at the ceremony commemorating the invasion who participated was...zero.😞

                          Sounds like it was the Covid angle not the dwindling numbers of survivors.

                          Hopefully we have a few more years of veterans there.

                          Remember Harry Patch was still going to commemorative events at ~110
