Is Sexual Orientation A Choice?
-
For most people it is not. Biology is destiny. But for many, it is.
If we look at human sexuality as a scale, with the preponderance being heterosexual, there will always be individuals drawn to the opposite sex, either inclusively or exclusively. They are a small minority, historically.
Their numbers have increased in recent decades. Some say growing from around 3% of the population to almost 10% of the population. There are various theories for this...Lack of physical exercise or sunlight causing a lack of testosterone, BCP chemicals in municipal water supplies, etc. Personally, I think the feminization of the male in Western culture has a lot to do with this...You treat little boys like little girls and you constantly tell them men are bad, well, this can lead to some young men doubting their masculinity or being repulsed by it. OTOH, lesbianism has been encouraged in modern society, especially through popular media, much of it aimed at teenage females.
The last brings up a point about choosing one's orientation...A good many young females, who are avowed lesbians or bisexuals, eventually wind up in monogamous heterosexual marriages and no longer pursue sex with other females. I think it less common, but I have known some males who were avowed homosexuals, who left the lifestyle and never returned, becoming heterosexual for the rest of their lives.
Perhaps it is Victorian in outlook, but they thought that man had evolved to the point that the mind could control the impulses of the body, especially if those impulses were not overly strong. If that be the case, is part of the growth of the LGBTQRZ+ sector due to societal pressure of those minds that are susceptible to suggestion or herd mentality?
For those who aren't sure of what they are, can they choose what to be?

What part of foot did you confuse with centimeter?

This shit would be sorted out a hell of a lot faster if:
- The Left stopped using minority sexual preferences as points in the Oppression Olympics, which you can turn in to be more popular, get jobs, and be above public reproach.
- The Right knock it off with the Gays are Sinful horseshit.
I'm now going to walk the walk by going outside and not discussing this further.

We have free will about the things we do, but not about the things we want. The question doesn't make sense.
That said, what we want is a function of many variables, and genes are just one of them. I'd say it's a choice or not in about the same way we can choose to like sushi, or Mozart.

Take a child young enough, teach and coerce him enough, and you could make him sexually desire chickens.

I doubt that. Some things are hard-wired. Look at all the things animals do by instinct even though nobody taught them anything.
-
I have no doubt that there is a genetic component to sexual preference, but I also agree that you could teach humans to sexually desire anything. We are the blankest slate, in the words of Ivermectin enthusiast and biologist Bret Weinstein. He and his wife wrote a book about it. A comparison to other animals is apt, as they are way more functional by instinct than humans are. And that’s a feature, not a bug. If you happen to know anybody who seems to think culture is important, way more important than most people realize, then that person is probably an insightful genius, and also probably very physically attractive.

I’ve had dogs that would have humped a chicken.

My dog humps formless geometric shapes, like couch pillows.

Of the people who gay/lesbian, I think there's a percentage of them that have a legit sexual disorder (I know, a shocking term) by being attracted to the same sex. I would say it's a disability, similar to those who are born with hearing or seeing issues, but in this case the hardware still works fine so it seems the attraction to the opposite sex (plug, meet outlet) that seems to be in disorder. Anyway... for the other percentage, I'd imagine the "why" answer runs the spectrum from being a conscious self-defining choice to being an unconscious one based on life experiences, culture, trauma, media, whatever.
